چکیده

Black carbon is the second largest contributor to human-induced climate warming, after carbon dioxide. International shipping is a major source of diesel black carbon emissions and not yet subject to international regulation. This paper investigates the contribution of black carbon from shipping to the global diesel black carbon inventory, by cross comparing results from a number of studies. While shipping contributed approximately 7 to 9 percent of global diesel black carbon in 2000, that contribution rose to between 8 and 13 percent in 2010 and is expected to maintain that share under current and planned International Maritime Organization policies. Available technologies and operational practices, such as fuel switching, scrubbers, and vessel speed reduction, can reduce shipping emissions by up to 70 percent.

Black carbon from ships: a review of the effects of ship speed, fuel quality and exhaust gas scrubbing

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has moved to address the health and climate impact of the emissions from the combustion of low-quality residual fuels within the commercial shipping industry. Fuel sulfur content (FS) limits and an efficiency design index for future ships are examples of such IMO actions. The impacts of black carbon (BC) emissions from shipping are now under review ...

CCN concentrations and BC warming influenced by maritime ship emitted aerosol plumes over southern Bay of Bengal

Significant quantities of carbon soot aerosols are emitted into pristine parts of the atmosphere by marine shipping. Soot impacts the radiative balance of the Earth-atmosphere system by absorbing solar-terrestrial radiation and modifies the microphysical properties of clouds. Here we examined the impact of black carbon (BC) on net warming during monsoon season over southern Bay-of-Bengal, using...

Including Maritime Transport in the EU ́s Climate Change Policy: Country-Based Allocation and Effects

The European Union (EU) is actively campaigning for the global regulation of carbon emissions generated by maritime bunker fuels because these emissions are presently barely regulated and are projected to increase significantly in the coming decades. However, since a global regulation has not been reached yet, the EU is seeking ways to include the shipping sector in its greenhouse gas reduction...

Energy Demand and Exhaust Gas Emissions of Marine Engines : Mitigating Technologies and Prediction

In recent years more and more focus has been placed on the environmental aspects of ships, because of the great attention to exhaust gas emissions from ships including CO2, a leading contributor to Green House Gasses (GHG) emissions, due to their negative effect on global warming. Maritime transport has clear environmental advantages: it expends relatively little energy and its infrastructure r...

Virtual Arrival as a Tool to Reduce Carbon Emissions from International Shipping

Policy summary International shipping of goods is an increasing source of carbon emissions, especially as production of goods for the developed nations is being off-shored to developing nations such as China. Some of these emissions are related to the problem of ships arriving at port before docking and unloading facilities are available, resulting in unnecessary costs, energy consumption and c...
